Magnesium Hydroxide is also known as brucite. The chemical formula of magnesium hydroxide is Mg(OH)2. Magnesium Hydroxide usually contains iron, manganese, zinc, etc. Belonging to trigonal system, magnesium hydroxide crystal usually appears as thick plated and flake or fibrous aggregate. The color is white or light green, with glassy color at the fracture and pearl color at the cleavage plane. Hardness: 2.5; relative density: 2.35. It is an altered mineral of typical epithermal solution in serpentine rock or dolomite. Magnesium hydroxide is a mineral material to extract magnesium and can be used as thermal insulation material.
Magnesium hydroxide is excellent flame retardant for plastic and rubber products, widely applied in rubber, chemicals, building materials as well as high polymer materials as electronics, unsaturated polyester, coating and paint materials. In the field of environmental protection, magnesium hydroxide can be used for flue gas desulfurization agent to replace the caustic soda and lime as the neutralizer of the acid wastewater, or used as oil additive for anti-corrosion and desulfurization. In addition, magnesium hydroxide can be also used in electronics, medical, thermal insulation or to make sugar or other magnesium salt products.
