As a kind of mica, Sericite is a silicate mineral that has stratified structure. Sericite is a kind of monoclinic crystal. Its crystal is scaly-like and has silky luster (white mica presents vitreous luster). Pure sericite block is in a wide range of colors, such as grey, purplish rose, white and so on. The radius-thickness ratio is >80; the specific gravity is 2.6~2.7; the Mohs hardness is 2~3. Sericite is flexible and bendable; besides, it has good abrasion resistance and heat resistance. It is also insulative, and difficult to dissolve in acid and lye. The chemical properties of sericite are very stable. According to the test results of sericite: the elasticity modulus is 1505~2134MPa; the heat resistance is 500~600℃; the thermal conductivity is 0.419~0.670W.(m.K)-1; the electrical insulating property is 200kv/mm; the radioactivity resistance is 5×1014hermal neutron/cm2 in contrast ratio. China has large reserves and wide distribution of sericite, but only few of them are worth development and utilization.
